About

IN THIS SECTION

The Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System (HRECOS) is your eyes on the Hudson. Our environmental monitoring network collects high-frequency water quality and weather data in and along the river. This data is publicly available in near real-time online. Scientists, teachers, and communities regularly use our data to study the health and flow of the river, inform management, create educational resources, and support safer navigation.

Gathering data on the Hudson

Origin

New York’s Hudson River is a precious resource. It provides drinking water for millions, navigation for commercial shipping, and habitat for hundreds of plant and animal species. Central to the growth of our state, the Hudson is also a place where many of us recreation and to connect to nature.

In the last few decades, climate change and increased human activities have converged to threaten the health and alter the flow of the river, creating new challenges for the Hudson’s communities. Continuous, real-time data about river conditions is essential to meet these challenges—whether they result from long-term changes over time or short-term events like Super Storm Sandy.

Formed in 2008, the HRECOS network provides the information we need to understand, manage, and protect the Hudson River for future generations. The data we collect and products we generate are used to address local and regional natural resource issues, protect public health and safety, improve navigation, and address research questions in and along the Hudson River.

Our Partners

HRECOS is managed and operated through a growing collaboration of governmental, academic, and private institutions with a shared interest in the health of the Hudson River watershed.
